Opetaia and Rocha also win. What the 12 September results mean for boxing's rankings. ## Ryan Garcia retains his WBC title against Conor Benn [Ryan Garcia](/boxer/ryan-garcia) stopped [Conor Benn](/boxer/conor-benn) at 1:25 of round two in Las Vegas on 12 September 2026, retaining the WBC welterweight championship. On the same card, Jai Opetaia stopped Noel Mikaelian in round nine and Alexis Rocha beat Jose Ramirez on points. The main event answered the immediate championship question at welterweight. The more complicated question is what comes next for the contenders, and how the cruiserweight organisations respond to Opetaia's win. ## Garcia vs Benn results and the main undercard The following results are recorded in [FIGHTMAG's completed fight-night report](https://www.fightmag.com/boxing-ryan-garcia-vs-conor-benn-live-results/): - Ryan Garcia beat Conor Benn by second-round TKO at 1:25. - Jai Opetaia beat Noel Mikaelian by ninth-round TKO at 1:30. - Andres Cortes beat Mark Magsayo by unanimous decision, 97-93 on all three cards. - Da'Mazion Vanhouter knocked out Raphael Akpejiori in round one at 1:58. - Alexis Rocha beat Jose Ramirez by unanimous decision, 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92. On the preliminary card, Vlad Panin stopped Dakota Linger in round four. Sean Garcia won a majority decision against Abraham Morales, while Abel Gonzalez and Oswaldo Molina won unanimous decisions over Raul Salomon and Pablo Rubio respectively. ## What Garcia's win means for the WBC welterweight rankings Garcia's first defence ended quickly. A right hand put Benn down, and the follow-up attack brought the referee's intervention. Garcia keeps the belt he won against Mario Barrios earlier in the year. This was a champion facing the first name in the contender list. Box-Rank shows for September in the WBC Benn is placed number one, directly beneath Garcia. The [WBC's event listing](https://wbcboxing.com/en/eventos/list/?tribe-bar-date=2026-08-29) identifies the contest as a mandatory welterweight defence. The [WBC welterweight rankings](/rankings/org/wbc/welterweight) therefore remain centred on Garcia as champion. Benn's next position is a separate decision. A defeat does not tell us whether the WBC will move him down a few places, keep him near the top or remove him from the list. There is also a distinction between holding a sanctioning body's belt and leading an independent ranking. The September Ring file lists Garcia at number six at welterweight. His win does not automatically turn that into number one. The [combined welterweight rankings](/rankings/welterweight) show those separate assessments side by side. ## Opetaia beats Mikaelian, but the belt labels matter [Jai Opetaia](/boxer/jai-opetaia) finished Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round. [Fightnews' ringside report](https://fightnews.com/opetaia-stops-mikaelian/196214) describes a difficult contest in which Mikaelian hurt Opetaia in round seven before the Australian recovered and forced the stoppage. Opetaia defended his Ring and Zuffa championships. The [promoter's advertised card](https://www.ufc.com/news/how-to-watch-garcia-vs-benn) named those titles for the cruiserweight bout. Ring is one of the five organisations covered by Box-Rank, so that defence is directly relevant to the [Ring cruiserweight rankings](/rankings/org/ring/cruiserweight). Mikaelian lost. But Box-Rank still lists him as WBC cruiserweight champion because this bout was Opetaia's Ring and Zuffa defence, not as a WBC title fight. A defeat in that setting does not, by itself, move the WBC belt. Currently, Opetaia is Ring champion, WBA number one, WBC number one and IBF number three. ## Rocha's win adds another welterweight question Rocha's decision over Ramirez gives the welterweight recap a second result to follow beyond the championship fight. Box-Rank have Rocha at number five with the WBO in August, number nine with Ring in September and number 19 with the WBC in September. The gap between those positions is already substantial. The useful comparison now is how each organisation responds to the same win. Does Rocha move closer to a title opportunity in the [WBO welterweight rankings](/rankings/org/wbo/welterweight)? Does the WBC bring him into its top 15? His [ranking history](/boxer/alexis-rocha) provides a way to follow those decisions as the new lists arrive. ## Which changes should appear next? Garcia and Opetaia won title defences, so the major fight night did not produce a different name in either of their championship slots. The next monthly lists may be more revealing for Benn, Rocha and Mikaelian. Historical pages should retain the positions published for their month. New contender positions belong in the next official update, and any separately confirmed championship change belongs in the current title view.
