Became champion: 26 July 1938

Won the title by stopping Freddie Steele in the first round on 26 July 1938, The Ring’s October 1938 editorial explicitly identifies that victory as the title transfer.

Freddie Steele

March 193726 July 1938

The Ring’s May 1937 editorial explains that Steele replaced Marcel Thil following criticism of Thil’s foul victory over Lou Brouillard and Steele’s clear win over Babe Risko. Its March 11 ratings already name Steele champion, contradicting the later September date in secondary lineages. The editorial does not give the recognition decision day.
